John Richard Hebert

John Richard Hebert, a decorated Vietnam war veteran and beloved uncle, passed peacefully from this life on March 28. Born September 15, 1947 in New Orleans to the late parents, John Merle Hebert and Flossie Dulaney, Ricky spent much of his life working with his hands as an iron worker; enjoying a good time; and later caring for his late brother, Kelton, while spending his final years as a resident of LaPlace. He is a veteran of the United States Army where he spent years dedicated to his country and was ranked as Sargent. His awards included: The National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Expert (Machine Gun) award, Letter of Commendation and Marksman (Rifle) award. His last place of command in the services was HHC 2nd Battalion 21st Infantry 24th Infantry Division in Fort Riley, Kansas. Ricky leaves behind two children, Kimberly Hebert Garlepied (Ron) and Richard John Hebert Jr; granddaughter Lauren Garlepied (Plauche); and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also leaves behind a sister, Sharon Hebert Childress and longtime companion, Marie. Ricky, “Unc” or "Papa Smurf" as he was so lovingly called, was a beloved uncle and hunting companion to his nephew and long time caregiver, Henry Lavell Childress Jr. He enjoyed many years of hunting and friendship with both his nephew, Lavell, and great nephew, Shane Lavell Childress. He will forever be remembered for his jokes; his love to cut a rug on the dance floor; his love of a good time; his laughs; and his final moments and his final fist bump as “Unc.” He is preceded in death by his daughter Andrea Hebert Gomez, his grandson, Anthony Garlepied and his brother Kelton Egle. His laugh and fist bumps will forever be missed, and live on in the hearts and memories of those who cherished him most. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Visitation and Funeral Service at Millet-Guidry Funeral Home, 2806 W. Airline Hwy., LaPlace, LA on Thursday, April 3, 2025. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by a Prayer Service at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Mandeville Cemetery, Mandeville.
